How has the economy fared over the past few years? Well, according to a recent New York Times article, the answer depends on where you live.

Americans overall have felt a strong economic recovery recently, while many of the nation’s most distressed communities have actually deteriorated. These cities tend to be older urban areas that are often synonymous with poverty and deindustrialization.

The Times story reports on data from the Economic Innovation Group's new Distressed Communities Index, a customized dataset measuring economic distress around the country. Interactive maps allow users to drill down to zip-code, county, and city levels.
